Stranraer – The Gateway to Galloway

Stranraer harbour was once a busy ferry port, but the larger ferries which link Scotland with Northern Ireland now dock 10 minutes up the coast in nearby Cairnryan. This means the southern end of Loch Ryan, where Stranraer sits, has become a popular marine leisure destination.

Stroll along the waterfront

Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the beautifully redeveloped West Pier. On a clear day you’ll get spectacular views of Ailsa Craig and Arran from the north end. Nearby Agnew Park has a wealth of facilities for children including a boating lake, miniature train, pedal go-karts and much more.

The town hosted the SkiffieWorlds coastal rowing championships in 2019. It also hosts the famous Stranraer Oyster Festival each year in September. A three day celebration of heritage, culture, people and of course great local produce!

Discover Stranraer Town Centre

Stranraer has a beautiful town centre dominated by the Castle of St John, a tower house built around 1500. Many cafes with tables on the pavement line the street. No need to worry about the weather on a visit to Stranraer either, there is so much to do inside too.

Try your hand at the ancient Scottish game of curling, it’s a little like bowls on ice. The North West Castle Hotel was the first hotel in the world to have its own indoor curling rink and it is open from October to April. Spectate in comfort from the rink-side bar or have a game yourself.

Or step back in time at Stranraer Museum, housed in the Old Town Hall which was built in 1776, the museum takes a fascinating look at the lives of local people throughout history.

Walk the Southern Upland Way

For those who enjoy a longer walk, Stranraer is close to the Southern Upland Way. A popular half day walk is to Portpatrick via Killantringan Lighthouse. The last two miles of the walk follow the cliff top path through a couple of small secluded bays then alongside Portpatrick Golf Course – just delightful!

Enjoy Golfing and Gardens

Keen golfers won’t want to miss Stranraer Golf Club, one of Scotland`s Top 100 Golf Courses. And garden lovers will be spoilt for choice, with the breath-taking Castle Kennedy Gardens, the magical Glenwhan Gardens and the renowned Logan Botanic Gardens all within easy driving distance of the town.

Relish the Coastal Beauty

The loch shore towards the east side of Stranraer is a haven for sea birds as is Wig Bay to the west of Stranraer near Kirkcolm. And Scotland’s most southerly point, the spectacular Mull of Galloway is just a forty minute drive away.
