stranraer west pier

Stranraer is the largest coastal town in Scotland to the south of Ayr. The town has recently become focused on Marine Leisure and Music. Stranraer has a beautiful town centre dominated by the Castle of St John. Many cafes with tables on the pavement line the street.

Stranraer also has one of Scotland`s Top 100 Golf Courses and is home to the first hotel in the world to have its own indoor curling rink!

Stranraer, on the shores of Loch Ryan – a sea loch, has a long and level promenade.  Ideal for a leisurely stroll. As you can see from our picture,The West Pier has been completely refurbished. From the end you get great views of  Ailsa Craig and Arran.

Agnew Park which is on the lochside near Stranraer`s West Pier has a wealth of facilities for children including a boating lake, miniature train, pedal go-karts and much more.

If it’s wet visit the Ryan Centre and swim in the Leisure Pool, or hire a hall for badminton or ball games. You may be able to spend an evening at the Ryan Theatre to watch a film or see a live show.

Curling is the ancient Scottish game played on the ice rink at the North West Castle, from October to April. Spectate in comfort from the rink-side bar or have a game yourself. The North West Castle was the first hotel in the world to have its own indoor curling rink.

For those who enjoy a longer walk, Stranraer is close to the Southern Upland Way. A popular half day walk is to Portpatrick  via Killantringan Lighthouse. The last two miles of the walk follow the cliff top path through a couple of small secluded bays then beside Portpatrick Golf Course – delightful! If yuo fancy a coffee along the wak, you can detour through Dunskey Glen to Dunskey Gardens.

The loch shore towards the east side of Stranraer is a haven for sea birds as is Wig Bay to the west of Stranraer near Kirkcolm.

A few miles north of Stranraer is the ferry port of Cairnryan. From Cairnryan you can take a day trip to Northern Ireland and options are available to visit the award winning Titanic Experience, see the sights of Belfast City Centre or even visit the Giant`s Causeway. Offers are often available on the Stenna ferry and Visit Scotland in Stranaer are a good source of information on whats available and current deals.
