Relax in the peaceful harbour village of Port William on the coast of Luce Bay in the Machars of Galloway. Port William is a haven for leisure craft as you gaze across the sea to the Isle of Man and Ireland.

Port William is an example of a planned village, lying on the eastern shore of Luce Bay in Galloway, founded by Sir William Maxwell of Monreith in 1770. The harbour, built for the convenience of his tenant farmers was one of the first in western Galloway.

Stop in Port William for your photo with “The Man”

A popular feature of Port William is the bronze statue of a fisherman leaning on a railing gazing out to sea. The statue was created by award winning sculptor Andrew Brown from Stranraer and was to produce a sculpture to reflect the  local people and their relationship with the local environment. Beside the statue is a sign reading ” What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare”. The statue is a popular photo opportunity.

More recently, in 2016 Port William Inshore Rescue Service (PIRSAC) opened a café and gift shop by the harbour called The View. And it does have a great view! Home baking too 🙂

Port William and surrounding area is an ideal holiday area for visitors of all ages with safe beaches, a wide variety of wildlife – animal and floral, quiet roads for walking and cycling, golf, antiquities, wonderful sunsets, and a friendly welcome.

There is a great wealth of history in the vicinity of Port William going back through smuggling, and early Christian sites to the Mesolithic Age.

Monreith

A mile to the south of Port William, Monreith has beautiful beaches including Back Bay pictured here. Monreith also has an unusual golf course – St

Medan’s which has 18 tees and 9 greens! A bronze statue of an otter can be seen near the entrance to the golf course as Gavin Maxwell, author of A Ring of Bright Water was born nearby.

The churchyard of Kirkmaiden-in-Fernis at the north end of the golf course is worth checking out with its unusual head stones, This is the mausoleum of the Maxwell Family.
