Girvan Harbour South West Coastal scotland

Girvan is a popular seaside resort on the Clyde Coast about half an hour south of Ayr. Girvan also makes a great base for touring as Culzean Castle, Dunure, Turnberry and Ayr are all within a relatively short distance to the North. Stranraer and the Rhins of Galloway are less than an hour to the south

Girvan has a delightful beach with awesome views to Ailsa Craig and Arran. In the summer, boat trips are available to Ailsa Craig from where the granite for most of the curling stones in the World is sourced. Ailsa Craig, also known as Paddy’s Milestone is an RSPB reserve and is home to around 70,000 gannets making the island the 3rd largest UK gannet colony. Interesting fact:- some of the largest slow worms in the UK can also be found on Ailsa Craig

As you enter Girvan from the south there is most attractive stone fishing boat on the roundabout with “Home of Ailsa Craig” carved on it. On the other side it says “Whit’s yer hurry” (to leave Girvan)

Whit’s yer hurry?

There is an interesting harbour in Girvan and its Main Street has many varied shops. Girvan has its own RNLI LIfeboat based in the harbour as well as several fishing boats.

For the walker, Girvan is on the Ayrshire Coastal Footpath so that excellent coast walks are available in both directions. Nearby  Byne Hill can be climbed relatively easily from the car park at the south of Girvan (207 metres ascent). There are superb views from the summit but remember that weather conditions can alter very quickly.

Girvan makes for a great place stay while enjoying the  western coastal section of the South West Coastal 300 Route #SWC300.

Other attractions in Girvan include the Quay Zone, a brand new leisure centre opened in 2017. The Quay Zone has a pool, fitness studio, gym, play zone and café. Girvan Golf Club welcomes visitors and has a delightful links and parkland par 64 course designed by James Braid. The course has stunning views of Ailsa Craig.

Lendalfoot – Shipwrecks and Ghosts!

About 6 or 7 miles south of Girvan is Lendalfoot. At the southern end of the village there is a coastal parking area from which seals can often be viewed on nearby rocks. In this layby you will also see a striking memorial to the Russian Naval Cruiser, Varyag which ran aground on the rocks off Lendalfoot in 1920. The ship remained visible until 1925 before succumbing to the waves. If you decide to walk to Lendalfoot from Girvan, you go through Kennedy’s Pass named after The Clan Kennedy, supporters of Robert the Bruce. Lendalfoot Beach is about a mile long and home to many seabirds . The road through Lendalfoot is lined with many small house and cabins which, in New Zealand would be referred to as “baches” The ruined castle behind Lendalfoot is Carleton Castle which is said to be haunted by the screams of the seven wives of the Baron who murdered them by pushing them over the cliff!
