Powillimount beach is located to the east of Southerness beach near Kirkbean on the Solway Coast and is part of the Arbigland Estate. It offers some spectacular views over the Solway Firth and on a clear day you can see the Lake District. It is a great beach to visit with curious kids as it is full of shells, rock pools and huge rock formations.
There is one large stone in particular that looks like it does not belong. It is a huge granite boulder and legend has is that the devil took a bite out of Criffel, the large hill that overlooks Powillimount and spat it out on the beach. The less fantastical version is that it was carried down to the beach by glaciers during the last ice age.
There is a car park right beside the beach which offers easy access.
Southerness beach is a vast expanse offering breathtaking views across the Solway Firth towards the Lake District. It is a combination of sand and rocks and at low tide reveals mud flats and rock pools. A dog friendly beach, Southerness is very popular with families and walkers alike.
Parking and public toilets are available at Southerness Point.
At the western end of the beach stands Southerness lighthouse which was built in 1749. Unusually it is square in shape. Although no longer a working lighthouse it is sometimes open to visit.
At the eastern end of the beach is Powillimount Beach, with its outstanding rock formations, it is worth the half and hour stroll from the lighthouse.
The Abbot’s Tower
discover the secret!
The Abbot’s Tower is a luxury B&B within a restored 16th Century Tower House.
Built in c. 1580 during the Scottish Reformation and once occupied by the last Abbot of the famous Sweetheart Abbey. The ruins of the Abbey are open to the public and are a short walk from the Tower. The pretty conservation village of New Abbey with its pub, shop, corn mill and tea room is also a short walk away.
The Abbot’s Tower was built during a period of near anarchy in the borders between Scotland and England. Heavily armed gangs roamed the countryside under the cover of darkness rustling, thieving, kidnapping and killing. By day they resorted to ransom, blackmail and protection rackets. During the first half of the century the Reformation was quickening in Scotland. Culminating in the country adopting a Calvinistic form of Protestantism as its national religion in 1560.
The Tower was once occupied by Gilbert Broun, the last abbot of nearby Sweetheart Abbey. A colourful character, Gilbert was famed for his vain attempts to turn the tide of the Reformation in Scotland. Sir Walter Scott romanticised the story by using Gilbert Broun as a model for the central character in his novel ‘The Abbot’. The Tower was built for defence, but also to be hidden. A secret place where Gilbert could continue his ministry without interference from the Crown.
The Abbot’s Tower has two original and glamorous suites. Both have their own unique charm, luxury and good deal of quirk. Each suite occupies just two guests and are not suitable for children.
The dungeon – a glamour filled suite with opulent bedroom. Well appointed en-suite bathroom (panelled bath with shower over). Private sitting room/library. Exclusive use of the Garden Room. Breakfast served in the Great Hall or Garden Room.
The abbot’s room – situated on the second floor of the Tower. Romantic and indulgent suite. With lavishly draped Jacobean four poster bed. Well appointed en-suite (walk in shower). Breakfast served in the Great Hall.
As current custodians of the Tower, we look forward to welcoming you.

John Paul Jones Birthplace Museum And Visitor Centre
The John Paul Jones Cottage Museum is located on the Arbigland Estate near Kirkbean in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. The cottage is where John Paul Jones, hero of the American Revolutionary War and founder of the United States Navy, was born in 1747. Jones’ father was a gardener for the estate.
The cottage has two rooms, restored and furnished as they might have been during John Paul’s childhood – he added the “Jones” later. An extension to the cottage houses a recreation of Jones’s cabin on his ship the “Bonhomme Richard”.
“I wish to have no connection with any ship that does not sail fast, for I intend to go in harm’s way.”
John Paul Jones is famous in the United States as the ‘Father of the American Navy’. He was born in poverty and through his skills became a distinguished naval officer fighting for both the USA and Russia. He travelled the world and even raided his home county when he landed on St Mary’s Isle near Kirkcudbright, stole the Earl of Selkirk’s silver and was captured and imprisoned in the Tolbooth – now Kirkcudbright’s arts centre. He was awarded a gold medal and a gold sword for his exploits but he was buried in an unmarked grave for over a century, having died, perhaps appropriately, in revolutionary Paris, France, in 1792.
In Britain he is remembered as a pirate and adventurer. Indeed, Benjamin Disraeli, an early biographer, wrote that the nurses of Scotland hushed their crying charges by the whisper of his name. In Holland, a Dutch song “Here comes John Paul Jones, that fine fellow” is still sung by school children.

Theatre Royal Dumfries
Scotland’s Oldest Theatre, established 1792.
Historically modern.
The oldest theatre in Scotland, the Theatre Royal is in the heart of Dumfries and first opened its doors in 1792. It has strong associations with the renowned Scottish poet Robert Burns, who wrote several pieces specifically for its stage.
The Theatre saw multiple changes of ownership during the first half the of 20th Century, before being bought by the Guild of Players in 1959.
The Guild managed to secure support from new sources and instead of planning on building new facilities upwards, they looked towards expanding outwards. Adjacent buildings were purchased, and renovation work began in 2014, completed by the end of 2015. The newly refurbished building includes several new spaces while maintaining many of the historic features, ushering Scotland’s oldest theatre into the 21st Century.
Attend one of the touring productions presented throughout the year, which includes live music, stand-up comedy and theatrical dramas. The Guild of Players presents a regular season of four shows, as well as a family-friendly Christmas pantomime.
Grab a drink at the bar before the show or enjoy a meal from the customised theatre menus at nearby restaurants. Want to get hands-on at the theatre? You can participate in one of the workshops or join our group of fantastic volunteers and help build sets and design costumes.
Getting there:
The Theatre Royal is located on the edge of Dumfries’ main shopping district, a short walk from the Dumfries railway station. It’s a 1.5-hour train journey to Dumfries from Glasgow or just under one hour’s drive from Carlisle Airport.

Mostly Ghostly Tours
A warm welcome to the home of Mostly Ghostly Tours – Dumfries and Galloway’s first paranormal investigation team and creators of a range of well-researched ghost and local history tours encompassing everything from Scotland’s most haunted road to an intriguing vampire legend dating back to the 12th century. We are proud winners of the 2012 & 2014 Dumfries & Galloway Life Tourism Champion Awards.
Mostly Ghostly, as our name suggests, are mainly focused on ghosts and hauntings, however we welcome reports of big cat sightings, UFOs, ostensible reincarnation and many other fascinating aspects of the paranormal and supernatural. United by our close friendships and determination to explore and evidence the unknown, we have all experienced something, both personally and collectively, that we cannot find a current explanation for.
The team has since developed and diversified, creating five exciting tours showcasing elements unique to our region. While exploring innovative ways to fund our research visits, we had the idea of developing a ghost walk for Dumfries. With our existing passion for ghost stories and local studies combined with a desire to promote tourism and culture in the region, it seemed like a natural progression. Our philosophy is that a good story well told needs little in the way of artistic license; each event takes months of careful research to create a truly authentic experience.

Welcome to Ellisland Museum and Farm. From 1788-1791, Ellisland Farm was the rural home of National Bard Robert Burns. He built the house for his family. Its fabulous location by the river Nith inspired him to write some of his most famous poems.
Today visitors can explore Burns’ farmhouse; the kitchen where meals were shared, his spence where genius was ignited. Then discover more about his life, work, and the setting that brought us Tam o’ Shanter, Banks O’ Doon and Auld Lang Syne.

The epitome of the moated, medieval stronghold, Caerlaverock’s great triangular defences guard the Solway shore. This site has had a turbulent past. In 1300, its 60-strong garrison was defeated by Edward I’s vast English army in a siege.
Despite the castle’s rugged appearance, its walls conceal a stunning Renaissance residence of the 1630s. See bluebells in spring, dragonflies and wildflowers in summer and barnacle
geese in winter.
