Cairnsmore Cottages

Situated on the edge of the Cairnsmore National Nature Reserve, at the foot of Galloway’s second highest Peak, Cairnsmore of Fleet, these cottages offer a fabulous and peaceful location in which to relax and explore this beautiful, peaceful, and often forgotten, corner of Scotland.

Located on a private Estate near Newton Stewart in Galloway, SW Scotland and set amongst a wealth of beautiful scenery, dominated by the 2,3331 ft granite mass of Cairnsmore of Fleet to the North and the Cree Estuary to the south, this location provides a perfect place to relax and escape the pressures of everyday life.

Set within a two hundred year-old B listed cobbled courtyard and stable block, this was once part of the shooting estate for the Dukes of Bedford. The cottages’ fantastic tranquil position creates an ideal retreat and a perfect base for exploring this  beautiful part of Scotland.

The surrounding area provides wonderful walking opportunities (highlighted in the Newton Stewart Walkfest) and the footpath taking you to the summit of Cairnsmore is only a short walk from the cottages. The local area offers varied interests for both wildlife and outdoor enthusiasts, along with those who enjoy exploring the surrounding coastal villages and market towns.

Galloway’s villages and towns have much to offer visitors. Newton Stewart, known as the Gateway to the Galloway Hills, including Dungeon Hills, Range of the Awful Hand and Merrick, is still supported by its weekly cattle mart. The town offers a selection of cafés and shops, along with a local cinema of the Art Nouveau period. Other nearby towns include Castle Douglas, the Food Town; Wigtown, Scotland’s Book Town and Kirkcudbright, the Artist’s Town. This small part of Scotland also boasts a local brewery and Scotland’s most southern whiskey distillery.

Cairnsmore Cottages offer a welcoming haven to return to after exploring the area, or indeed simply peaceful and well appointed homes from home to relax and recharge.

Cairnsmore Stable Cottage

Cairnsmore Stable Cottage sits within the quadrangular courtyard of the original Stable Block on the Cairnsmore Estate, once the shooting estate of the Dukes of Bedford.

Previously a smithy and dining area for the estate workers, the cottage now provides luxury holiday accommodation for up to 4 people on one level.

Cairnsmore Stable Cottage has been fully refurbished, with several measures to improve guests comfort, the most important being the Geothermal under floor central heating system. A wood-burning stove in the living room and flagstone flooring throughout enhance the cosy cottage atmosphere.

The enclosed garden is south facing and a wonderful sun-trap where red squirrels and greater spotted woodpeckers are frequent visitors.

On the opposite side of the cottage, the courtyard garage houses the log store with room for storing bikes or canoes. An eyebolt and padlock give additional security. Outside wash facilities are available for dogs, bikes, walking boots etc.

Renewable Energy: all of the heating and domestic hot water for the cottage is provided byusing heat extracted from a 100m deep bore-hole and Ground Source Heat Pump. The central heating system is controlled automatically and provides constant hot water for your comfort.

Tackroom Cottage

As the name denotes, the cottage was originally the tack room for the estate stable block. Now one of 4 residences, and situated opposite Cairnsmore Stable Cottage, Tackroom Cottage offers quirky and spacious self-catering accommodation for up to 2 people in one double bedroom.

There is a large living-dining room overlooking both the cobbled courtyard and the garden. The room is furnished with 2 comfortable sofas, oak dining and coffee tables and a large freeview TV. Paintings from local artists are on show around the cottage, and for those who prefer a wee quiet space, a small snug upstairs offers a day bed and selection of books.

The cosy wood-panelled bedroom comprises of a comfortable Edwardian double bed and bedside tables and also has the original (non-working) range in the fireplace. This room is accessed via the adjacent dressing-room with further antique furniture. The bathroom has a bath with overhead shower and the bright kitchen is well-equipped including an integral fridge and freezer, a dishwasher, electric cooker and microwave.

The garden is enclosed by stone dykes and houses a unique pair of open-sided granite-columned hay barns where bats roost. There are 2 small lawned areas and a secluded walled corner to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet. Guests have access to a gas BBQ under one of the barns.

Anwoth Holiday Park

Anwoth Holiday Park is situated in the charming town of Gatehouse of Fleet.   This delightful town has restaurants, cafe’s and bars and is in easy reach of the Cairnsmore of Fleet National Nature Reserve.

One of the wildest places in southwest Scotland, but still surprisingly accessible, Cairnsmore is a paradise for walkers; a patchwork of muted colours from the low-growing vegetation enhancing the stunning views.  Watch out for peregrine falcon, red and black grouse, red deer and feral goats.

In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Gatehouse of Fleet was a thriving industrial centre with cotton mills, shipbuilding, a brewery and its own port. It was known locally as the ‘Glasgow of the South’.

Traces of this industrial past can still be found in its buildings and street names and in the Mill on the Fleet, a former textile mill which is now an award-winning visitors’ centre tracing the economic and social history of Gatehouse.

Gatehouse provides opportunities for a variety of sporting activities, including golf, walking, cycling, fishing and sailing. Port Macadam, once the town’s harbour, is still used by small pleasure craft.

Among the local historical attractions are Cardoness Castle, a late 15th-century fortified tower house that was the ancient seat of the McCullochs, and the ruins of Anwoth Church with its atmospheric graveyard, complete with Covenanter graves.

Much to see and do when you base yourself at Anwoth Holiday Park!

Set in the beautiful Galloway countryside, Cream o’ Galloway is a family friendly visitor attraction on an organic cow with calf dairy farm. Visit to enjoy Ice Cream Making Workshops, Nature Trails, Crazy Golf, Cheese Making Courses, Farm Tours, Cafe, Sundae Menu and massive Ice Cream Scooping Counter.

Cream o’ Galloway is open daily from April to end October, from 10am – 5pm. The Ice Cream Parlour and Cafe is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays during term time.

Activities

Ice Cream Making Workshop: This 90 minute activity runs regularly during school holidays, in a specially designed, socially distanced new workshop area. Suitable for adults and children (aged 5+), you’ll create your very own dream ice cream from scratch, selecting the flavours you most enjoy, or inventing new flavour combinations. Adult groups will be able to incorporate alcohol flavours. Ice Cream Making Workshops costs £25 per workstation, suitable for up to three people working together. Pre-booking is essential.

Cheese Making Course (full day): The all-day Cheese Making Course is scheduled to run every Thursday. You’ll learn to make two types of cheese at socially distanced workstations; a soft cheese which can be easily replicated at home and a pressed cheese, which you will then mature at home. Cheese making involves periods of time when you pause and let nature take its course. During these times you’ll go on a quick tour of the farm and you’ll enjoy a cheese tasting experience. The cost of the workshop is £95 per workstation, or £130 for two people sharing a workstation. This activity requires a minimum of four participants to run.  Pre-booking is essential

Crazy Golf: Our crazy golf course is all about having relaxed fun as a family. The 9 hole course will take you down and back up a slight slope where you’ll putt over, under and around a range of farm-themed obstacles. Designed and built by our farm team, our crazy golf course is full of fun rather than technical challenge. Popping in for an ice cream, or winding down after a busy day exploring? Then this is a light-hearted activity that the whole family can enjoy together. Crazy golf is open each day the visitor centre is open and costs £3 per person or £10 for a group of four people. No need to pre-book, get your ticket once you are here.

Farm Tours: Unlike most dairy farms we keep our calves with their mum to suckle naturally. Our ethical dairy model is based around treating the animals, the land, our environment and the people who work here with respect and kindness. A farm tour is a great way to find out more about our farming system, and why we farm in the way we do. Check our website for latest details on our farm tours. Pre-booking is strongly recommended.

Nature Trails & Dog Walk: We have an incredibly beautiful natural environment at Cream o’ Galloway and we work hard to protect it, to enrich it and to make it accessible for members of the public to enjoy. There are four miles of signposted nature trails that will help you get close to the nature and the wildlife that have made their home here, and there is no charge to explore them. The trails take in two wildlife lochans, a wildlife hide, acres of woodland that we have planted over the last 20 years. There is also some stately ancient woodland that red squirrels particularly enjoy.

Please note: the adventure playground is now closed.

Cardoness Castle

This site is closed until Spring 2021.

Historic Scotland are working hard to gradually reopen the places you love while making sure the experience is safe for everyone. Find out more about reopening plans:

Cardoness was built in the 1400s by the notorious McCulloch family, as a demonstration of their status. The well-preserved prison shows the kind of reception their most unwelcome guests might expect.

Anwoth Old Schoolhouse and Clachan Cottage are two delightful, characterful cottages situated in the picturesque historic hamlet of Anwoth near to Gatehouse-of-Fleet.  Situated at the heart of an area of outstanding natural beauty they provide comfortable and homely accommodation for couples seeking a peaceful retreat in a central location.  Ideal for exploring the beautiful unspoilt countryside and magnificent coastline of Dumfries and Galloway either by foot bicycle or car.  Just one and a half miles by quiet scenic road is the quaint “wee toon” of Gatehouse-of-Fleet. The same distance in the opposite direction is the Fleet Estuary with quiet sandy beaches. Opposite the cottages is the atmospheric Anwoth Old Kirk noted for its historic connection with the Covenanters and more recently for its fame as a setting in the 1970’s Wickerman film.

Clachan Cottage has a cosy, romantic atmosphere with French Doors leading on to a sunny south facing patio with attractive garden and burn. Many species of birds and red squirrels visit the feeders. The heron and occasionally an otter can be seen searching for wee brown trout in the burn.

Anwoth Old Schoolhouse although having a cosy cottage atmosphere has a deceptively spacious sitting room (originally the schoolroom) and retains some of the details as featured in the school scene in the infamous Wickerman film.  The attractive kitchen/conservatory overlooks the fish pond and garden with views of the bird and squirrel feeders.

Both cottages accommodate 2 persons only.

One well behaved dog is welcome in Clachan Cottage by prior arrangement.

Both cottages have wood burning stoves and both have Wi Fi.

The attractive 2 acre gardens are surrounded by woodland which is home to roe deer, fallow deer, badgers, red squirrels and many species of birds. The main garden is shared by both cottages.  Clachan Cottage has its own private garden and Anwoth Old Schoolhouse has its own paved sitting area with garden table and chairs.
