Theatre Royal Dumfries
Scotland’s Oldest Theatre, established 1792.
Historically modern.
The oldest theatre in Scotland, the Theatre Royal is in the heart of Dumfries and first opened its doors in 1792. It has strong associations with the renowned Scottish poet Robert Burns, who wrote several pieces specifically for its stage.
The Theatre saw multiple changes of ownership during the first half the of 20th Century, before being bought by the Guild of Players in 1959.
The Guild managed to secure support from new sources and instead of planning on building new facilities upwards, they looked towards expanding outwards. Adjacent buildings were purchased, and renovation work began in 2014, completed by the end of 2015. The newly refurbished building includes several new spaces while maintaining many of the historic features, ushering Scotland’s oldest theatre into the 21st Century.
Attend one of the touring productions presented throughout the year, which includes live music, stand-up comedy and theatrical dramas. The Guild of Players presents a regular season of four shows, as well as a family-friendly Christmas pantomime.
Grab a drink at the bar before the show or enjoy a meal from the customised theatre menus at nearby restaurants. Want to get hands-on at the theatre? You can participate in one of the workshops or join our group of fantastic volunteers and help build sets and design costumes.
Getting there:
The Theatre Royal is located on the edge of Dumfries’ main shopping district, a short walk from the Dumfries railway station. It’s a 1.5-hour train journey to Dumfries from Glasgow or just under one hour’s drive from Carlisle Airport.
Ae Cafe and Bike Shop
Ae has a brilliant trail center as part of the famous 7Stanes with routes for all levels. The forest also offers some lovely walks.
There will always be a warm welcome at Ae and it’s a great place to go walking, horse riding or to simply hang out and relax. Come and have a look for yourself!

when shades of night began to fall, certain young mathematicians shed their triangles, crept up walls and down trees, and became pirates in a sort of Odyssey that was long afterwards to become the play of Peter Pan. For our escapades in a certain Dumfries Garden, which is enchanted land to me, were certainly the genesis of that nefarious work, Peter Pan.”

Mostly Ghostly Tours
A warm welcome to the home of Mostly Ghostly Tours – Dumfries and Galloway’s first paranormal investigation team and creators of a range of well-researched ghost and local history tours encompassing everything from Scotland’s most haunted road to an intriguing vampire legend dating back to the 12th century. We are proud winners of the 2012 & 2014 Dumfries & Galloway Life Tourism Champion Awards.
Mostly Ghostly, as our name suggests, are mainly focused on ghosts and hauntings, however we welcome reports of big cat sightings, UFOs, ostensible reincarnation and many other fascinating aspects of the paranormal and supernatural. United by our close friendships and determination to explore and evidence the unknown, we have all experienced something, both personally and collectively, that we cannot find a current explanation for.
The team has since developed and diversified, creating five exciting tours showcasing elements unique to our region. While exploring innovative ways to fund our research visits, we had the idea of developing a ghost walk for Dumfries. With our existing passion for ghost stories and local studies combined with a desire to promote tourism and culture in the region, it seemed like a natural progression. Our philosophy is that a good story well told needs little in the way of artistic license; each event takes months of careful research to create a truly authentic experience.

Welcome to Ellisland Museum and Farm. From 1788-1791, Ellisland Farm was the rural home of National Bard Robert Burns. He built the house for his family. Its fabulous location by the river Nith inspired him to write some of his most famous poems.
Today visitors can explore Burns’ farmhouse; the kitchen where meals were shared, his spence where genius was ignited. Then discover more about his life, work, and the setting that brought us Tam o’ Shanter, Banks O’ Doon and Auld Lang Syne.

The epitome of the moated, medieval stronghold, Caerlaverock’s great triangular defences guard the Solway shore. This site has had a turbulent past. In 1300, its 60-strong garrison was defeated by Edward I’s vast English army in a siege.
Despite the castle’s rugged appearance, its walls conceal a stunning Renaissance residence of the 1630s. See bluebells in spring, dragonflies and wildflowers in summer and barnacle
geese in winter.
