RSPB Mersehead Nature Reserve

Situated on the scenic north shore of the Solway coast, Mersehead is an extensive wetland and saltmarsh area, a haven for breeding waders, wintering waterfowl and year-round bird and wildlife-watching.

Spring is particularly magical, when the wet meadows fill with lapwings and skylarks and the air is filled with birdsong as they compete to establish territories and attract a mate. In the evenings you can hear the natterjack toads.

In Summer you can look out for the young birds making their first venture into the outside world.

Autumn sees the arrival of large numbers of the Svalbard population of barnacle geese, as well as pintails which flock to the flooded wetlands in autumn and winter.

And perhaps our favourite annual display at Mersehead, is the winter murmurations of starlings swirling around the reed beds, truly unforgettable.

Colvend Golf Club

Our testing parkland layout offers a challenge to all abilities and is one of the area’s most popular golfing experiences. The Club was founded in 1905 with a Willie Fernie designed 9hole layout and over the years this has been developed into the 18hole course you see today. We welcome golfers and non golfers of all abilities and buggies are available on request.

With spectacular views across to the Cumbrian Fells and even to the Isle of Man, we are also privileged to enjoy some exciting wildlife visitors including red squirrels, roe deer, peregrine falcons, and even occasional otters.

Colvend is one of those places you’ll want to come back to again and again to savour both the course and our renowned hospitality.

Colvend is a picturesque hamlet with a well-stocked convenience store serving local residents and holidaymakers alike. We offer a wide range of groceries, chilled foods, fresh fruit and vegetables, a good selection of wines and a range of seasonal goods as well as bottled gas. We also stock various gardening products like compost and plants and invite you to visit our Garden Shed to view these.

Colvend Store is open all year round, seven days a week.

Adjacent to the store is the Treats & Eats Tea Room serving delicious meals, baguettes, paninis, rolls and home-baked cakes and scones. We also serve tea, coffee, soft drinks and smoothies and you can even rent out the tearoom for your personal party – just click here to ask for details.

We look forward to meeting you during your stay in this beautiful corner of Scotland!

Powillimount beach is located to the east of Southerness beach near Kirkbean on the Solway Coast and is part of the Arbigland Estate. It offers some spectacular views over the Solway Firth and on a clear day you can see the Lake District. It is a great beach to visit with curious kids as it is full of shells, rock pools and huge rock formations.

There is one large stone in particular that looks like it does not belong. It is a huge granite boulder and legend has is that the devil took a bite out of Criffel, the large hill that overlooks Powillimount and spat it out on the beach. The less fantastical version is that it was carried down to the beach by glaciers during the last ice age.

There is a car park right beside the beach which offers easy access.

Southerness beach is a vast expanse offering breathtaking views across the Solway Firth towards the Lake District. It is a combination of sand and rocks and at low tide  reveals mud flats and rock pools. A dog friendly beach, Southerness is very popular with families and walkers alike.

Parking and public toilets are available at Southerness Point.

At the western end of the beach stands Southerness lighthouse which was built in 1749. Unusually it is square in shape. Although no longer a working lighthouse it is sometimes open to visit.

At the eastern end of the beach is Powillimount Beach, with its outstanding rock formations, it is worth the half and hour stroll from the lighthouse.

Sandyhills is a large sandy beach near Dalbeattie on the Dumfries and Galloway coastline. The beach lives up to its name and at low tide has a vast expanse of sand, backed by gentle sand dunes. The beach is the perfect spot for a walk, a paddle or a picnic.

Dogs are allowed on the beach all year around. There is a car park and public toilets beside the beach for easy access.

There are 23 golf clubs that are members of the South of Scotland Golfers Association. Courses range from wee 9 hole courses in the picturesque Galloway hills to magnificent 18 hole links round the extensive coastline. Green fees range from as little as little as £10 in winter up to £60 for Southerness. Great value is to be had on courses to suit all tastes and abilities.

Visit South of Scotland Golf for a comprehensive details of all courses at
