We are a long standing clear water, spring fed lochan. We treasure our fish, which we stock from local sources and the weights range from 3lb upwards. we stock a percentage of Blue and Rainbow but we also have Browns, Brookes and Tigers. We pride ourselves on a beautiful , quality surrounding where quality not quantity of fish can be caught. Our fishery manager is usually on hand to help with any anglers questions or queries.

Our waters are clear, and run all year round, but with this advantage of clear water, our maintenance for keeping it clear of weed is continual. So every Monday and Tuesday are designated cutting days. We only cut sections making it fishable during maintenance, but this can also encourage a feeding pattern in our fish which helps any angler fishing those days.

We do have a professional angler, Sue McNiven who can come and help with expert tuition on the water and also our fishery manager can help with any problems.

Whether you are a beginner or an expert the two well stocked lochans at the Green Frog in Moffat offer an easily accessible location to enjoy fishing. We offer both fly fishing and bait fishing with barbless hooks and regardless if you are on your own or with a group of family and friends, there’s always acres of space and a warm welcome at the Green Frog.

Thomas Carlyle’s Birthplace

Childhood home of one of Britain’s most influential thinkers

Thomas Carlyle’s Birthplace is now closed until 2021.

Little did anyone know that the boy born here in 1795 would go on to become one of the most prolific writers and social commentators of the 19th century.
The unassuming exterior of this wee house in Ecclefechan, near Lockerbie, belies its significance in Scottish history. The house was constructed by Thomas Carlyle’s father and uncle – both local stonemasons – and is a fine example of Scottish 18th-century vernacular architecture.
When Thomas Carlyle was 13, he left Ecclefechan and walked 84 miles to Edinburgh, to attend university.
The Arched House has remained virtually untouched since 1881, when it first opened to the public with the Carlyle House Memorial Trust, started by Carlyle’s niece soon after his death.

There are 23 golf clubs that are members of the South of Scotland Golfers Association. Courses range from wee 9 hole courses in the picturesque Galloway hills to magnificent 18 hole links round the extensive coastline. Green fees range from as little as little as £10 in winter up to £60 for Southerness. Great value is to be had on courses to suit all tastes and abilities.

Visit South of Scotland Golf for a comprehensive details of all courses at

Gilnockie Tower

The Esk Valley Clan Armstrong Reiver Centre

The Clan Armstrong Ancestral Home

History, Mystery and Discovery while exploring the far-reaching lands of the Anglo-Scottish Border Reivers, join us for an enthralling 500 years of Clan Armstrong History at Gilnockie Tower Reiver Centre.

Gilnockie Tower is a stunning example of a Scottish Pele tower. Built some 500 years ago, it was home to Johnnie Armstrong, a notorious border reiver. In 1530 this powerful Laird was hanged by a young Scottish king, James V, his story romanticised by Walter Scott.

Gilnockie Tower has five floors, including a vaulted chamber, banqueting hall and a 72 step spiral staircase. The entrance stone into the vaulted chamber is thought to be two thousand years old. Once a roofless ruin, the building has been completely refurbished and is open as a clan and visitor attraction. The Clan Armstrong Centre houses reiving artefacts and the world’s largest collection of Armstrong archives.
For the moment the Johnnie Armstrong of Gilnockie Cafe is serving hot drinks only.

Many times recognised by historians, students and visitors alike as: the Gilnockie Tower; Armstrong’s Tower; Hollows Tower; or Holehouse Tower and believed to be from the period circa 1490-1520 as a rubble built, carved stone, Medieval Period Scots Tower House.

Whilst in the ownership of the famous Johnnie Walker, Annandale Distillery closed in 1918, seemingly forever.

Not so!

Rescued by David Thomson & Teresa Church in 2007, this once derelict distillery sprang back into life on November 3rd, 2014
Three years later, on Wednesday November 15th, 2017, we filled the first ‘new era’ bottle of Annandale Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

It’s a beautiful place! Come and visit us, take a tour, sip our stunning peated and unpeated whiskies and taste our delicious food. We promise you a warm Scottish welcome.
Whisky by the nip, the bottle or the barrel.

Welcome to Ellisland Museum and Farm. From 1788-1791, Ellisland Farm was the rural home of National Bard Robert Burns. He built the house for his family. Its fabulous location by the river Nith inspired him to write some of his most famous poems.

Today visitors can explore Burns’ farmhouse; the kitchen where meals were shared, his spence where genius was ignited. Then discover more about his life, work, and the setting that brought us Tam o’ Shanter, Banks O’ Doon and Auld Lang Syne.

DELL MAR is in the charming old ‘Spa’ town of Moffat and dates back to 1218. This real ‘borders gem’ has many assets that have made it one of the most popular ‘stop off’ favourites in Scotland. However, ‘just passing through’ is fast changing and many people have stayed on to explore and experience this ‘magnetic’ town, where they join the ranks of those who return again and again!.

Sitting on the A701, known as the ‘scenic route to Edinburgh’, this picturesque town is within one hour’s drive of Glasgow, Selkirk and the Capital itself. It is perfectly placed on the map to explore two of Scotland’s most beautiful, if often overlooked, counties — Dumfries & Galloway and the Borders.

Although surrounded by beautiful hills reaching to nearly 3000′ to the north-west, most of Moffat itself is on the level.

MOFFAT. Became famous in 1870’s as a Victorian Spa town. It boasts an excellent range of hostelries, restaurants and cosy cafes to cater for all tastes. You will find SHOPPING a delight, with many ’break from the norm’ shops on the High Street and Well Street.

The Buccleuch nestles in a picturesque valley surrounded by the rolling Moffat Hills. The small town of Moffat is perfectly and conveniently situated just 2 miles from the M74, the primary route between Scotland and England. The area surrounding Moffat offers a unique undulating landscape with many hills and valleys, rivers and Lochs. This truly is the ideal base to stay a few days and explore this beautiful, gentle and almost undiscovered part of Scotland.

The Buccleuch is well renowned for its excellent food brought to you in the aptly named ‘Beef Tub Comfort Grill’. We are particularly proud of the quality and pedigree of our raw product. Wherever possible this product is sourced nearby provided it meets our quality criteria.

The hotel boasts a proud ancestry dating from 1760 which is reflected in its architecture and every effort has been made to retain some of the olde world charm. Of particular note, installed during a recent refurbishment, are the wall to wall murals depicting the hotel as it was in the early 1900’s along with decoupage on the tables incorporating hundreds of images and title deeds dating right back to 1772!

As a privately run hotel in Moffat, Dumfries & Galloway, we at the Buccleuch take the greatest care and attention to ensure that your accommodation in Moffat is relaxing and comfortable.
