The Swallow Theatre 2021

Exciting News

Enjoy live performance once again at Scotland’s smallest theatre.

Clouds

Time & Again Theatre Company

Performance dates :

Friday 3 September | 7pm

Saturday 4 September | 2pm

The year is 1913 and women are rising up…

Amidst the flock of pioneers fighting to rule the skies, Winifred Baxter is determined to become the first Englishwoman to enter an air race and fly right around the country!

In the open fields of Moorhanger Grange, she learns and takes to the skies during Britain’s last glorious summer, weathering the chaos of friends and family, the suffragette movement, a glorious garden party and far too much nephology – the study of clouds.

The play Clouds by writer Laura Crow and performed by a cast of five, combines the suffocating society of pre-war Britain with a touch of comedy, early feminism, and pure vintage flair!

Directed by Jacqueline Wheble, Clouds premiered at the Greater Manchester Fringe Festival in July 2019, where it won the Coliseum Pick of the Fringe Award. This led to it transferring to the main stage of the Oldham Coliseum in September 2019.

Time & Again Theatre Company explore all things historical in ways that are fresh and relevant for today.

“Clearly inspired by the likes of Oscar Wilde, they had the audience laughing within minutes

…I left the performance feeling inspired”
Feminist Fringe

“A wonderfully atmospheric play, Clouds is an interesting snapshot – and reminder – of the battles that women fought, indeed are still fighting, in having a fair and equal world”

Edinburgh Guide

“A gentle fascinating glimpse of three women trying to make a difference in the world of 1913”

British Theatre Guide

“The show is a masterpiece”

Looking for Wolverhampton’s Latin Quarter and The Cavalry Twill Incident

Adaptable Theatre

Performance date : Saturday 11 September | 7pm

Ian Pearce and Tim Knight (Double Dickens) return to The Swallow Theatre with an evening of nostalgia, comedy and poignancy in these two fine examples of dramatised storytelling.

In Looking for Wolverhampton’s Latin Quarter

Ian Pearce takes a touching and self deprecating look back at his deluded teenage years.

Being a trainee butcher at the Co-op is only a temporary situation before he reveals his true artistic talents to the world. No careers officer or personnel manager is going to stop him producing his rock album, publishing his poetry or mounting his first exhibition.

A world of awkward romantic relationships, Sex Pistols, Crossroads and Angel Delight. An honest and clear-eyed view of his younger self. Yes, he freely admits, “I really was that stupid”.

“Pearce is a charming raconteur” – The Wee Review. Edfringe 2019

“This fast paced performance will have audiences laughing as they empathise and reminisce” –

Edfringe audience 2019

“… we’ve all been hit in the face with a frying pan of nostalgia and loveliness”

George Fouracres Edfringe 2019

“What a wonderful show … gentle, warm-hearted, and hilarious comic story-telling. Such an engaging performance … book a ticket and go back to the long hot summer of ’76.” – Rob Johnston

In The Cavalry Twill Incident

Tim Knight presents a light-hearted, though occasionally poignant, tale of personal reminiscence.

The story introduces us to his family, examining his parents’ relationship and illustrating the often conflicting emotions and frictions which lie at the heart of family life.

Centred on an unforgettable event from Tim’s youth, The Cavalry Twill Incident is storytelling which is both entertaining and thought provoking.

Duration: 130 minutes including an interval

The Budapest Café Orchestra

Performance date : Sunday 19 September | 7.30pm

We are delighted to welcome the natty dressing super musicians back to The Swallow Theatre.

BCO play a blistering barrage of traditional folk and gypsy-flavoured music from across the Balkans and Russia, Klezmer laments, Romanian Doinas, Hungarian Czardas and their own unique re-imaginings of some of the biggest tunes ever written by the classical greats.

The Budapest Café Orchestra was established in 2009 by British composer and violinist, Christian Garrick, and led by him have won legions of fans with their magical and infectious performances.

A small, but impeccably formed, orchestra of just four players, the BCO combines violin, guitar, accordion, double bass, saz & balalaika to dazzling effect, creating an awesome aural alchemy normally only characteristic of far bigger ensembles.

Two of the country’s celebrated international soloists revel at the heart of proceedings.

Accordionist exemplar Eddie Hession is a supreme accordion champion of Great Britain. In his illustrious career he has accompanied Luciano PavarottiPlacido DomingoJose Carreras and Chris Rea.

Christian Garrick is one of the world’s most celebrated jazz violinists. He has played with the likes of Dame Cleo Laine & Sir John DankworthWynton MarsalisNigel KennedyBireli Lagrene and Caro Emerald.

Another member of the Orchestra is one of Russia’s most enigmatic musical exports. The Sultan is played expertly by Adrian Zolotuhin, a master of the strummed strings of domra, balalaika, guitar and saz.

Veteran bass-man Kelly Cantlon has been in the business of laying down the low notes for many moons. Kelly found fame as a vagabond with northern soul sensations Jimmy James and the Vagabonds.

Evoking vivid images of Tzigane fiddle maestros, Budapest café life and gypsy campfires – plus a few surprises along the way – hugely entertaining, immense skill and profound musicianship, a show by the BCO is good enough to make you want to book that holiday down the Danube!

Miss Lindsay’s Secret

Performance dates :

Saturday 25 September | 2pm   Saturday 25 September | 7pm

Sunday 25 September | 2pm      Sunday 25 September | 7pm

The concealed, intimate true tale of a Scottish seamstress revealed through live music and drama.

Come in.
Shut the door.
Open the box.
What’s inside?

Hidden for over a century, this intimate tale of a Scottish seamstress binds the gentle hills of Glenesk to Canada’s heady Klondike goldrush.

Using original live music, drama and historical material from the Glenesk Museum, a lively and moving local story, woven into Scotland’s national identity, reaches across time and continent.

This compelling show grows from a deep respect for material culture, in an age when life stories are lost to the ether.

Written and performed by Maria MacDonell with Alan Finlayson and musician Georgina MacDonell Finlayson and presented after a successful and well received run at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Audience Comments about the show

“All the more powerful for the truth behind the story. An excellent piece of drama- brings history to life with intrigue, curiosity and emotion.”

“… draws us into Miss Lindsay’s Secret with humour, only a little guilt and a compulsion to know what happens!”

“Absolutely fascinating; Absorbing and authentic. I loved this show!”

“Beautiful language, incredible music, all three performers were exceptional”

“Beautiful wonderfully Scottish”
