Master Chef Professionals champion, Gary MacLean, is the top chef appearing at Castle Douglas Harvest Food Festival, Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th September.

The event will showcase a wonderful array of Scottish food and drink and celebrate the town’s vibrant independent high street.

Gary’s demonstration will be the climax of a weekend which will see Scotland’s only Food Town host workshops, a drinks festival, wine tastings, producer’s stalls, children’s entertainment and live music.

The organisers aim to inspire interest in good quality local produce. There is even a Design Your Own Sausage competition with the winning flavour to be produced by award winning butcher Ballards. Local bakers are being encouraged to enter the Harvest Scone Championship by submitting their creations for judging on Saturday morning. Gardeners are being asked to bring in their seasonal produce to showcase the fantastic diversity of nutrition which can be grown domestically.

Workshops hosted by artisan chocolatier Gillian Warden of In-House Chocolates and Annette’s Baking in a Box will give the public a chance to get hands-on. The drinks festival will feature craft beer, cider, gin and prosecco along with performances from Pete Kirk and the fabulous Mary Barclay band. A walk-in wine tasting with expert Chris Bain from the town’s Bottle List will complete the weekend’s offer to all palates. As if that is not enough, a display of farm machinery and live sales at the town’s auction mart will add to this celebration of Castle Douglas’ heritage links to food production.

Joining Gary Maclean will be former Scottish Chef of the Year, Ian McAndrew from the Blackaddie in Sanquhar; Ed Pook of Mr Pook’s Kitchen, Tony Budde’s with his fish masterclass, Thomas Francis of Home Dumfries and the legendary Tom Kirkpatrick.


Gary said: “I am delighted to be attending Castle Douglas Harvest Food Festival with a demo showcasing local produce. Castle Douglas is a fantastic town for food and drink with a great hub and thriving high street. I can’t wait to demo this produce and share hints and tips with those attending the festival.”

Castle Douglas has a proud history as a food destination, traditional market town and as an agricultural community. We want the local community to bake, dig up, display and design their own creations in order to celebrate all the different food elements of our town at a time of year when the natural bounty of our local larder is most evident.

Tickets for the festival are £5 for the weekend which includes all demonstrations. Drinks festival tickets are £10 and include festival admission and admission to Sunday’s walk in wine tasting at the fabulous Bottle list in Mr Pook’s on King Street.
