Wigtown is a bustling town seven miles south of Newton Stewart, on the Machars peninsula. It is recognised as Scotland's National Book Town and is home to the annual Wigtown Book Festival. The town has an excellent range of independent and second hand bookshops. Wigtown also has an array of places to eat, shop and stay.

The Martyrs' Stake is in Wigtown; a monument commemorating the spot where two women Covenanters were drowned in May 1685.
