Dumfries | Dumfries and Galloway

Dumfries, which is nicknamed ‘The Queen of the South’, is the largest town in South West Scotland. Steeped in Scottish history, it has been an important market town since Roman times. With shopping, museums, parks, art galleries and golf courses, there is something for everyone to enjoy on a visit to the town.

The two Roberts

This Royal Burgh is connected to many famous names. Once home to Scotland’s National Bard, Robert Burns, whose famous song Auld Lang Syne is sung around the world each year at Hogmanay (New Year’s Eve). Follow in Burns’ footsteps along the beautiful banks of the River Nith, visit the home where he lived his final years, or dine in his favourite establishment, the Globe Inn.

Stepping back further in time, Dumfries was also the scene of Robert the Bruce’s murder of his great rival the Red Comyn at Grey Friar’s Kirk in 1306 kicking off a bloody civil war.

Peter Pan and Panoramas!

Younger visitors may like to step into the enchanted garden at Moat Brae. This house and garden was often visited by J.M. Barrie during the childhood years he spent in Dumfries and it was the inspiration behind Peter Pan and Neverland.

For something a bit different, why not take in the amazing panaramic views of Dumfries and the surrounding countryside at the world’s oldest working Camera Obscura. It is located on the top floor of the windmill tower at Dumfries Museum. Originally an astronomical instrument, it was installed in 1836 when the windmill was converted into an observatory.

Explore a bit further

A holiday in Dumfries offers the ideal base to further explore the region. The stunning Caerlaverock Castle, Sweetheart Abbey and Drumlanrig Castle are all within easy reach. As well of course as the world famous Galloway Forest Park.
