WWT Caerlaverock Wetland Centre

Wildlife and Bird Watching
Dumfries

Almost all life depends on wetlands for water, food, or habitat. Yet a third of all wetlands have been destroyed. We are pioneers in saving threatened wetland wildlife, a centre for excellence in conservation science and experts in wetland management and creation.

WWT Caerlaverock Wetland Centre

is a stunning nature reserve where the wild world still has the power to touch, thrill and inspire.

The Atlantic merse at WWT Caerlaverock is among the most important saltmarsh systems in Britain.

The entire Svalbard breeding population of barnacle geese spend the winter on the Solway and up to 10,000 birds can be seen from the hides, towers and observatories at Caerlaverock which is considered one of the best wildlife watching sites in the UK.

The site also boasts the most northerly UK population of Natterjack toads and one of only two UK populations of Triops.

The visitor centre has a shop selling optics, wildlife books and bird food. The gallery has a programme of wildlife art exhibitions all year round and shows videos and live screen CCTV footage from the reserve.

Friendly knowledgeable staff and volunteers are there to guide and engage visitors and staff at the centre provide a year-round programme of special events.

The Sir Peter Scott Observatory

overlooks the Whooper Pond with fantastic close up views of wild whooper swans.

This ‘state of the art’ wildlife viewing facility has huge picture windows looking out at the hundreds of swans, ducks and geese.

Comfortable seats and heating makes this a wonderful wildlife watching experience.

For those with mobility problems there is a lift to the top of the tower, giving panoramic views around the reserve.

Experience the Daily swan feeds

at 11am and 2pm from October to March bring the birds in very close and the warden gives a running commentary whilst feeding the birds.

A touchscreen connected to the WWT swan research database provides up to date information on the ringed whooper swans, many of which are pictured on the amazing wallpaper.

This is a must see experience and unique in Scotland.

Accommodation

The warm and comfortable Caerlaverock Farmhouse (Click here for more information) is situated at the very heart of the famous WWT Caerlaverock nature reserve and commands superb views from its own observation tower across this and the adjacent National Nature Reserve. Badgers can be seen feeding from the conservatory every night and in winter wild whooper swans roost just below the bedroom windows.  A mile of screened approaches link the farmhouse to hides, observatories and towers from which up to 15,000 barnacle geese and a wide variety of other birds such as waders, ducks and raptors can be secretly observed.
