Details

The Wood of Cree is the largest ancient wood in southern Scotland. In spring, the woodland really comes alive, with bluebells on the ground and birdsong in the air. You’ll hear pied flycatchers and warblers.

The wood is the perfect place to see willow tits, which are declining in the UK, as well as barn and tawny owls, and visitors such as redstarts and garden warblers. While you’re here, spend some time on the otter platform and look out onto the river, which is teeming with life throughout the year.

Barclye is the newest part of the reserve where, with support from our partners, we’ve been planting trees to extend the woodland. It could be 50 years before work is complete but it’s already a fantastic part of the reserve to explore. Ramble along the marked trails, enjoy spectacular views and find out more about the history and archaeology of this magical place.

The reserve is open at all times and entry is free but donations to help us continue our work here are welcome.

Dog walkers please note that this nature reserve is important for wildlife. RSPB Scotland welcomes responsible access, in line with the Scottish Outdoor Access Code. During the ground-nesting bird breeding season (1 April to 15 August) we request that you keep your dog close to you, preferably on a short lead, clean up after your dog and that you keep to the paths.

From Newton Stewart, travel north along minor road through Old Minnigaff. Turning left past Monigaff church, continue along the minor C50 road for a further 3 miles (5 km).

Car parking is available at Barclye Wood, 3 miles (5 km) from Newton Stewart and at Wood of Cree, 1 mile further north along road.

There is a waymarked Woodland Walk (1.25 mile or 2 km) which can be extended to a 3.5 mile (5.5 km) walk including the scrubland trail. Very steep, rough and uneven in parts. Routes provide a variety of seating and there are some narrow footbridges to access parts of the walk.

Scenery can be enjoyed from High Viewpoint over the Cree valley and marshes on our Woodland Walk. There is an Otter Viewing Platform on boardwalk near car park (though seeing one is a rare treat, so best of luck). A picnic area is provided near the car park also.
