About The Pheasant

Since opening its doors in 2015 The Pheasant has gone from strength to strength, gaining loyal local customers and regular returning visitors to the area, often describing it as a “hidden gem”. Husband and wife team Andrea and Morag Cuomo have worked hard to establish a restaurant in this rural area and have been awarded a number of accolades including Restaurant of the Year 2019, Dumfries and Galloway Life Awards and a Hospitality Honour 2018 Scottish Food Awards Academy.

Born and bred in Naples, Andrea's cooking reflects his upbringing submerged in the rich culture of Italy. The menu is a combination of authentic Italian dishes inspired by his home kitchen as well as innovative recipes with Andrea’s own twist. Specialities include handmade pastas, fresh filled ravioli and rich ragu made with local venison.
Wigtown native Morag, adds a Scottish flair to homemade puddings and sweet delights that rounds off the perfect three course meal. Her love for foraging and using locally grown fruits comes across in her desserts and are well worth leaving space for. Gorse ice-cream with yogurt, thyme and honey cheesecake and coconut pannacotta with sea buckthorn coulis and chocolate soil or hedgerow sorbet are all seasonal favourites.

The focused menu, freshly cooked to order, offers flexibility for those with dietary requirements. Gluten free, vegetarian, vegan, allergies and intolerances are well catered for, we encourage the mention of any needs when you make your booking is recommended in order to best prepare for your visit.

Using locally sourced produce is important to the small family business with the aim to support local suppliers whenever possible and take advantage of the wealth of high quality produce that Scotland and Dumfries and Galloway itself has to offer.

The Pheasant interior has been renovated and transformed from an old Inn to a sophisticated dining space with Morags creative eye and attention to detail. This has led to a modern rustic styled dining room with bespoke lighting, driftwood bar and original artwork to create an elegant, warm and cosy atmosphere. The eclectic lounge with log fire offers a great place for a casual lunch and pre-dinner drinks giving guests the chance to relax before going to their table. All in all, great food prepared and served with love offering a unique dining experience in the heart of Galloway.

The Pheasant is ideally situated in Sorbie, a small village in the heart of The Machars on the South West 300 route – 6 miles outside of Wigtown. There is a huge range of accommodation in the area to suit all tastes whether it's a comfortable hotel, seaside self catering, secluded camping pod or quiet caravan site. Park up next door at Sorbie School Camping with your caravan or motorhome to enjoy an intimate stay at this tranquil spot, the perfect location for moseying home after your meal at The Pheasant.

Combine your stay with a bike ride, walk in the woods or a ramble on one of the many coastal paths. There are many family favourite walks just a stones throw away from Sorbie, in particular Kilsture Forest. These beautiful woods are great for families or a dog walk at any time of the year but are particularly beautiful in April and May when a carpet of bluebells cover the forest floor.

Within 10 minutes, there are other great walks from the coastal paths to the grounds of the great Garlieston Estate. Galloway House Gardens offers a sheltered walk through the grounds down to Rig Bay, a lovely beach for a stroll and a play. You can also follow the coastal paths round to the village of Garlieston or if you’ve got more time and energy head all the way to Cruggleson Arch further down the coast towards Whithorn. The footpath to St Ninians Cave near Whithorn follows a burn through the woods down to a large pebbly beach. Great for the kids to explore and a lovely place to enjoy the sunset. There are many historic areas of interest too – such as The Whithorn Story and Roundhouse – a replica of an Iron Age roundhouse. And of course the famous annual Wigtown Book Festival that takes place in the town each Autumn. Loose yourself in a book in one of the many second hand book shops, browse for antique and gifts or grab yourself a bargain at the well stocked and much loved community shop.

Furtherafield, the Machars is popular area for keen road cyclists to explore more of the region. For those with a need for a more hair raising ride Kirroughtree Visitor Centre is one of the 7 Stanes, offering over 400km of world class mountain biking trails in the south of Scotland. There are a wide range of routes to suit all abilities, hiring facilities, cafe, playground and walking paths all leading in to Galloway Forest Park. As a designated Dark Sky Park the Galloway Forest is perfect for watching the night sky; Glentrool and Clatteringshaws visitor centres offer a base and information.
