Sawney Bean`s Restaurant
Cairndale Hotel, English Street

Sawney Bean was believed to have been the last known cannibal in Britain and is understood to have lived with his family in a cave in South West Scotland.

The disappearance of travellers who were ambushed by the Sawney Bean clan in the area led to the whole family being rounded up by King James VI who required 400 men to do the job. The gruesome family were taken to Edinburgh where they were executed.

The pictures around the restaurant, which is in the Cairndale Hotel,  highlight the story of Sawney Bean.

“A bright bustling bistro bar, offering a varied menu incorporating fresh local and other Scottish produce wherever possible.”

Roast Rump of Galloway Lamb with Celeriac Mash –¬† “The lamb was succulent and full of flavour and the celeriac mash tasty – a well-balanced dish.”

Hot Butterscotch Pancake with Poached Conference Pear –¬† “The pear was perfectly poached and with a delicate flavour, accompanied by delightfully sticky sauce with a rich toffee taste.”
