Not much is known about Saint Ninian, his story comes from the mists of time, but he is perhaps the most influential person in Scotland’s history. A fourth century missionary saint, he was the first to bring Christianity to Scotland and founded his centre of operations and what was to become his shrine at Whithorn, in the legendary Candida Casa, hwit ærn or White House. The site became a place of pilgrimage in the middle ages, attracting Kings and nobles from far and wide and a huge cathedral stood at the centre of a thriving town. You can still make your own pilgrimage when you visit the recent excavations and the visitor centre that interprets this fascinating story.
