Kirpatrick Macmillan, man on wheels

Home » Attraction » Kirpatrick Macmillan, man on wheels

Thornhill, set in the picturesque Nith Valley saw the beginning of the transition of transport from legs to wheels. As you cycle the traffic free roads of Dumfries & Galloway, remember Kirkpatrick Macmillan, the man who had the vision to put the wheel and the pedal together and give us the bicycle.

A blacksmith who worked on the Drumlanrig Estate, his invention enabled him to cover the fourteen miles to Dumfries in under an hour. He was also a mean fiddle player so why not enjoy a ceilidh in his honour while here.
