Dunskey Castle is a spectacular ruin on the cliff tops a short distance from Portpatrick
The castle can be reached by climbing a flight of steps to the cliff top above Portpatrick and following a good footpath for less than a quarter mile. The footpath from Portpatrick extends for a few miles beyond Dunskey Castle as far as Knockinaam Lodge Hotel and the walk is thoroughly recommended. On the way to Knockinaam, you pass above beautiful Morroch Bay. The walk from Portpatrick, along the cliffs to Knockinaam is described in more detail here – Portpatrick Cliff Walks
Dunskey Castle dates back to the 13th or 14th Century and has a gruesome history. It was plundered and burned in 1489 and was rebuilt in 1510 and extended in 1648. The entire building became derelict by 1700 and hasn’t changed much since. The castle has featured in several film and TV sets.
Rumour has it that there is a secret tunnel from Dunskey Castle to Portpatrick.
