Climb Criffel Hill

Home » Attraction » Climb Criffel Hill
criffel near new abbey

Criffel may be less than 2000 feet high, but as this is the highest hill for some distance it is prominent in views of the Solway Coast, from the Lake District.

Due to its relatively low height, most people used to hill walking would be able to get to the summit and back within about 3 hours so that it makes Criffel an ideal half day walk. On a clear day, there are great views from the summit of the Solway Coast and the Lake District fells beyond including Skiddaw and Blencathra.

There is a small car park at Ardwall about 1.5 miles south of New Abbey. The path starts near the car park entrance after passing through a kissing gate and after a short distance, at a waymarker post, take a track which branches to the right. From this point, the path is obvious rising steeply in places first through mixed forest then on open heather clad hillside to the summit. At time of writing, August 2020 ,the path is being upgraded and only the last five minutes or so of walking was on the old boggy path which looks as if it will be completed within the next few weeks.
