Fordbank House

Bed and breakfast in Book Town

Fordbank House is a distinctive Victorian country residence, the former home of the McLelland family who set up Bladnoch Distillery ( in 1817 and ran the local Preserved Potato Manufactory and Farina Mill.  It lies within a private, gated garden of one acre with an orchard and extensive views of the surrounding countryside.

Lesley and David Miller will be your hosts and will be greeting you on your arrival, serving breakfast every morning and available throughout your stay. They are happy to advise on local activities and places to visit in the beautiful surroundings of the Machars peninsula.  Wigtown is five minutes away by car, and hosts Scotland’s national Book Festival ( in late September, early October.

Three bedrooms are available: a king size, double, and twin through

sleeping 6 in total. The comfortable rooms all have en-suite facilities. Linen, towels, hairdryer and complimentary toiletries are provided and an iron is available on request. Tea and coffee making facilities are available in bedrooms.

Guests can enjoy a delicious breakfast while taking in the gentle rolling landscape of the Galloway countryside from the dining room. Fruit, cereals, preserves and home-made bread/toast, tea and coffee are provided, or guests can request porridge, or a cooked breakfast if required.

The area is rich in music and art festivals throughout the year and is popular for walkers, cyclists, anglers, and people who love the outdoors.  Whether you like coast or country, you’ll find something to delight you in this unspoilt part of Scotland.  Warmed by the Gulf Stream, the area is also rich in a selection of impressive gardens to visit (  and indeed the owners of Fordbank are in the process of restoring the garden to its former splendour.  Nearby Galloway Forest is renown for its 7 Stanes cycling route ( and its dark skies.  Beaches, historical sites as well as a plentiful selection of pubs are within easy reach.
